David Smith Book Design
This project explores the work of sculptor David Smith through publication design, focusing on how layout, typography, and image sequencing can communicate the physical presence and structural qualities of his sculptures. Known for his large-scale steel constructions and gestural welding techniques, Smith approached sculpture as a dynamic dialogue between material, space, and the artist’s hand. The book translates these sculptural principles into a visual system that emphasizes structure, balance, and spatial relationships.
Through a carefully developed typographic hierarchy and grid-based compositions, the book organizes Smith’s artworks, archival images, and texts into a coherent visual narrative. The design reflects the geometric strength and industrial character of his sculptures while maintaining clarity and readability for the viewer.
By treating images, captions, and text as interconnected components within the layout, the publication aims to echo Smith’s process of constructing form in space. The book presents his works not only as documentation of sculpture but also as a study of rhythm, scale, and material presence within the printed page.
